Blanco to be Santana's personal catcher?

Ken Davidoff of Newsday also reported on his Twitter that catcher Henry Blanco was catching Johan Santana today in his bullpen session.

Maybe Ken and I are making a bit too much out of this but I really think this is just the first step into Blanco becoming his personal catcher. With Blanco's defensive skills and ability to call a game, it makes perfect sense to me.

I would expect to see Blanco as the Met catcher on Opening Day.

Mets interested in Calero

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Mets are interested in reliever Kiko Calero.

The Mets are only willing to offer a minor-league deal because of Calero's injury concerns. He has been seeking a major league deal.

Calero's recent run of injuries has scared off a lot of teams after the 35 year old had an impressive 1.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69/30 K/BB ratio in 60 innings with the Florida Marlins last season.

Added by Tom Pich at 9:14 pm: I like Calero, but only on a minor-league deal. His injuries worry me to the point that I would be very hesitant to give him a guaranteed contract.

Week in Review: February 21-27

Here's all the Mets news from this week in one handy post:

We're on Facebook, and Twitter.

Further evidence Delgado isn't coming back?

Jersey number 21 has been assigned to newly signed C Rod Barajas. That number obviously belonged to 1B Carlos Delgado since 2006. This could be yet another sign that the Mets have no intentions of bringing back the veteran after he recovers from another hip surgery.

Taking a look at the possible Opening Day lineup

As of right now the projected lineup for Opening Day would be:

1. CF-Angel Pagan (SH)
2. 2B-Luis Castillo (SH)
3. SS-Jose Reyes (SH)
4. 3B-David Wright (R) and/or:
5. LF-Jason Bay (R)
6. 1B-Daniel Murphy (L)
7. RF-Jeff Francoeur (R)
8 C-Rod Barajas (R)

There is a lot of versatility with the top 3 spots all being switch hitters. If Pagan can ignite the offense and have at least an on base percentage close to .360-.375, they should be fine in Beltran's absence. I don't think that's asking too much for one month of the season.

Castillo has proved he can hit second with pretty solid ability. He has been an excellent bunter in the past and can move runners over when necessary. Let's hope he has a very similar season to last year's.

We've yet to see what Reyes can do outside of the lead off spot for an extended period of time but if Jerry Manuel is that positive about the move, why shouldn't Met fans? As long as Jose keeps a solid approach and doesn't go homer happy he can really contribute in the 3 hole (at least till Beltran comes back).

I think in a perfect world when they get Beltran back you'd like to see Reyes lead off followed by Beltran, Wright and Bay. That would make an unbelievable first 4 hitters to face. That would be extremely tough on any pitcher. Even if you placed Castillo 2nd and moved Beltran to 4th (to make it righty-lefty(or SH)-righty, in the 3-4-5 slots) that's a big time offensive squad.

You'd love to see Murphy have the type of year he did in his first 131 AB's after being called up in 2008. The Mets sure are needing that type of production. The Mets are also hoping Francoeur can have the type of year he did after he arrived in Queens. It really seemed as if his bat was revived when he got to the Mets after struggling in Atlanta. In Barajas your not getting a high on base guy but he can provide a good amount of power lower in the order. If he can stay out of the double play and take a few more walks, he's an above average 8th place hitter.
Overall, I like this lineup. I like it a whole lot better with Beltran back in it though. It should be interesting to see how they fare but it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that this lineup can and will keep them in the division race all year. Reyes is back and that is HUGE. Wright should definitely bounce back from last year's power shortage and Bay's mere presence can not only just help protect Wright but help the offensive production overall. Of course, they must stay healthly and you know how that goes with the Mets in recent years.

Best Move, Worst Move of the off season

MLB Trade Rumors came out with their annual Best Moves and Worst Moves of the off season. The Mets made both the best list, and the worst list.

MLBTR's Best Moves of the offseason:
•Mets sign Jason Bay to a four-year, $66MM contract.
•Yankees acquire Curtis Granderson for three prospects.
•Phillies acquire Roy Halladay for three prospects.
•Red Sox sign John Lackey to a five-year, $82.5MM contract.
•Mariners acquire Cliff Lee for three prospects.
•Rays acquire Rafael Soriano for Jesse Chavez.

The Bay contract looks pretty decent right now. They got a slugger who they know is going to go out and play everyday at a decent price. (Yes, they paid a lot, but not as much as he could have possibly gotten in a better market.) Now, this contract could look bad in a couple of years, but for the time being, the Mets are looking good.

MLBTR's Worst Moves of the offseason:
•Dodgers sign Jamey Carroll to a two-year, $3.85MM contract.
•Mets sign Alex Cora to a one-year, $2MM contract.
•Adam LaRoche declines a two-year, $17MM offer from the Giants.
•Astros sign Brandon Lyon to a three-year, $15MM contract.
•Giants re-sign Bengie Molina to a one-year, $4.5MM contract.

This is no doubt Omar's worst move off the winter. He jumped on Cora too quickly. Had he waited it out, he probably could have signed Cora to a one-year deal worth $1.25-1.5 million. As a matter of fact, Felipe Lopez, who is most definitely a better player, signed a one-year $1.75 million dollar deal (plus incentives) with the Cardinals today. (Don't get me wrong, I like Cora a lot. But Omar definitely overpaid for him.)

Thoughts?

Reyes could face subpoena

SI.com is reporting that federal law enforcement officials have alerted a number of "world-class athletes" to expect grand jury subpoenas in the case against Canadian physician Anthony Galea. Among those athletes is Mets shortstop Jose Reyes.

SI explains further:

Galea, who is based in Toronto, faces charges in his native Canada of conspiring to smuggle human growth hormone (HGH) and the drug Actovegin into the U.S., conspiracy to smuggle prohibited goods into Canada, unlawfully selling Actovegin, and smuggling goods into Canada in violation of the Customs Act. The doctor's client list is elite; it includes Tiger Woods, U.S. Olympic swimmer Dara Torres, Broncos quarterback Chris Simms, former Browns running back Jamal Lewis, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes and Donovan Bailey of Canada, who won the 100 meters at the 1996 Olympics. These athletes have acknowledged being treated by Galea but deny receiving any performance-enhancing drugs from him. Known as a progressive if not unorthodox physician, Galea developed a loyal following among athletes for his use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, a legal procedure thought to potentially speed recovery from injury.

It is still not clear if or when these subpoenas will be issued.

This could be a major distraction if Reyes is indeed subpoenaed. He could have to miss some time in camp he is, and right now that's the last thing the Mets need.

More issues with the back of the pen

As Tom reported earlier, Kelvim Escobar and his ailing shoulder likely won't be set for Opening Day.

To add to that, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com is reporting that Francisco Rodriguez is feeling no better from pink eye and will now have to go visit a local doctor on Monday.

Obviously, Frankie's injury isn't as serious as Escobar's. It's not known how much time, if any he will miss.

Fonzie to return as player?

According to Marty Noble's blog, Noble Thoughts, the agent for Edgardo Alfonzo is trying to convince GM Omar Minaya to sign his client.

Peter Greenberg, Alfonzo's agent, said yesterday that his 37 year old client would be willing to sign a minor league contract with no invitation to the big league camp. "He'd just like to show he can still play," Greenburg said, "And he'd like the chance to retire as a Met if it doesn't work out."

If the Mets decline his services as they have for two years, Alfonzo will sign with the Newark Bears, adds Noble.

Update: Joe Beimel

As Tom reported on this site yesterday, the Mets have reportedly offered Joe Beimel a contract.

To update the story further, Joel Sherman reported on his twitter today that although the Mets like Beimel, they aren't willing to go to the $2M range he is seeking.

So unless Beimel is willing to go down in price or the Mets concede a little, he won't be joining the squad as their second lefty out of the pen.

I really hope a deal gets done for either Beimel or Ron Mahay (who is still out there).

New Mets pitcher likely to start season on DL

David Lennon of Newsday just tweeted the following:
Isn't this just great? So much for Escobar being 100% healthy. Supposedly the guy rushed his rehab just get a contract--which is not cool.

Mets make offer to Joe Beimel

Joe Beimel is considering an offer from the Mets, reports Troy Renck of the Denever Post. Beimel, who would likely fill the Mets void for a second lefthander in the bullpen, said: "We've been talking to them for a good part of the off season. I am still just being patient, waiting for the right deal."

Beimel signed with the Nationals on March 18th last off season, and was later traded to the Rockies.

I do believe the Mets and Beimel will come to terms. I like the signing in that it will be pretty cheap (think $1 million for a year plus incentives) and he's a decent and durable pitcher.

Lopez back at camp

Adam Rubin reports that LHP Arturo Lopez, who was DFA'd this week to make room for Rod Barajas, has cleared waivers and is back at camp as a non-roster invitee.

Lopez doesn't have a chance to make the team. He may end up at Triple-A, but that's about it.

Odds and Ends: Lopez, Livan, Branyan

F-Mart to be left out

According to Mike Puma of the NY Post, Fernando Marintez is likely to be left out of his natural position of left field.

With Jason Bay signed till at least the 2013 season (he has an option year for one more after that), Martinez is going to have to play elsewhere. That is, if he stays with the Mets.

With Carlos Beltran's contract only running through 2011, Martinez would find a better home in center. Jerry Manuel has stated that he thought Martinez handled himself pretty well out there in his short time there last season.

"I think center field is probably easier because everything is right in front of you", Manuel said.

MLB Draft Order Set, Mets have 7th pick

With the signing of Rod Barajas official, the MLB Draft order has now been set.

The Mets will have the 7th selection overall. They lost their 57th pick when they signed Jason Bay, a Type A Free Agent. The Red Sox will get that pick back in return.

The Mets also have the 89th and 122nd picks.

Luis Castillo is Trying

I'll be the first to admit that I wanted the Mets to trade Luis Castillo and sign Orlando Hudson this off season. But, that didn't exactly pan out, and Luis is going to be the Mets Opening Day second baseman.

He's been the guy that Mets fans have trashed and criticized the past couple years. And some of that criticism is well deserved. In 2008 Castillo had a terrible year. He couldn't hit, and he was not in shape. Trade rumors loomed over his head during the 2009 off season. However, he wasn't traded, mainly due to his poor play and big contract. Determined to succeed, Castillo lost weight and showed up to camp in 2009 in great shape. He had a decent year, hitting .302.

This past off season, the rumors about Castillo being traded off continued. But, Omar Minaya & Co. were unsuccessful in trading him. When asked about the trade rumors, Castillo responded:

“Yeah, I heard, but I’m a professional guy. I don’t have any control over what they want to do. I still work hard – harder and harder – to get ready for this year. I don’t care what’s going on.”

Not only that, but Castillo lost even more weight this off season. The man is trying, and I applaud that. He could very well have been a bum all off season, and sit at home and sulk in the fact that many Mets fans absolutely hate him, and that he's on the trading block. But instead, Luis took it in stride, and worked his tail off to train for the upcoming 2010 season.

So I'm asking all you Mets fans out there, all you people that wanted Castillo traded (like myself.) Give the guy a chance. He's trying.

Mets looking at free agent relievers

Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports that the Mets are looking at some free agents to help fill their bullpen. He heard that the team could have interested in Joe Beimel and Ron Mahay.

I like Beimel as the second lefty out of the pen. I think the wear and tear on Pedro Feliciano's arm is a concern, and that they need another reliable lefty.

Mets now offering a 'Four Game Premium Pack'

With the new 'Four Game Premiun Pack', Mets fans can now "Build your own Packs" by choosing Opening Day, April 5 or one of the May 21-23 Subway Series games at Citi Field, and then selecting one game each in April, May and June.

April's matchups feature the only visits to Citi Field by the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. Homestands in May include the first trip to New York by the rival Philadelphia Phillies. June's schedule is highlighted by Interleague series against the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins.

Tickets go on sale for the 4 game packs Thursday, March 4th.

Seems to me like yet another way to keep the ticket sales moving. They must not be selling too well as of now. Think about it, they had the full season then the half season then the 15 game plan then the 6 game plan and now they are all the way down to the 4 game "Premium" plan.

Single game tickets are available Sunday, March 7th.

Mets sign Cintron

The Mets announced Monday that they have comes to terms with IF Alex Cintron on a minor league deal.

Cintron, 31, can play all over the infield (mostly at 2B and SS) but will mostly serve as injury relief up in Buffalo.

Centerfield spot is wide open

Rich Coutinho of 1050 ESPN Radio says the Mets CF position is wide open heading into the start of camp.

Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. will duke it out for the position with Pagan the early favorite to be Carlos Beltran's replacement till he returns from injury.

In that month of Beltran's absence, the CF position is going to need to provide a decent amount of offense. You can't expect Beltran type numbers but whoever wins that spot is going to be expected to get on base and move some runners.

With Pagan possibly getting the nod and even possibly hitting lead off, Manuel could have the top 3 guys in his lineup all being switch hitters (Pagan-Castillo-Reyes).

Mets sign Rod Barajas

Updated 2/21 at 5:45 pm Barajas will take a physical on Monday and will report to camp once he passes.

Original Post 2/20 at 3:10 pm Rod Barajas has signed with the Mets, according to Ken Rosenthal on Twitter.

The deal is worth $1 million on a major league contract, plus $1 million in incentives.

He is likely the favorite to win the Mets starting catcher job.

Delgado has another hip surgery

Carlos Delgado has had another hip surgery, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

Delgado will not be able to train for months, but still hopes to play at some point this season. He had been playing winter ball in Puerto Rico.

It's a shame. I like Carlos, and would have liked him on the Mets if healthy, but he hasn't been able to catch a break recently. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

Fred Wilpon Q&A Highlights

Q: What was the offseason like for you?

FW: Torture. Very, very difficult. So, look, you’ve heard the theme that we have to stay healthy. I’m very optimistic that they will. And I think that when you have very good - and in some cases great - players, it doesn’t necessarily translate into a great team. So I think that if they stay healthy, they have some great players and now our people have to translate that into a great team, and that’s what my optimism is about, and what my hope is about.

Q: What about the offseason was torture?

FW: When you have all those injuries, and a bad season, and the fans were disappointed - but not any more disappointed than I was and I’m probably the biggest fan. But now, that’s last year. Now it’s 2010 and it’s 70 degrees in Florida and the sun is shining, so I have a great feeling of optimism. The players by the way – to a man that I’ve spoken to and I’ve spoken to 20, 25 of them – I sense a difference in their goals and their attitude. Listen, those are the only guys that can do it.

Fred Wilpon: It's been torture

Fred Wilpon spoke to members of the media today down in Port St. Lucie. Full details of the meeting are coming later, but he told the media that this off season has been "torture." In addition, he said that the team will remain under Wilpon control for "generations." Fred also denied that the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme had an affect on the Mets operations and finances.

Well Fred, it must be hard to watch your son, Jeff, run the franchise into the ground. Oh, by the way, that noise that you hear is the groan of Mets fans who just read that the team will be owned by the Wilpon family for "generations."

Mets trying to void waiver claim on Marshall

The Mets are trying to void the waiver claim of pitcher Jay Marshall, who was claimed by the team from the A's earlier this winter. Marshall, 27, has not shown up to camp due to an injury that the Mets believe existed before the claim.

Mets up the offer to Barajas

Rod Barajas is one step closer to becoming a Met. The Mets have now offered Barajas a major-league deal, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

As we reported last night, Barajas was deciding between minor-league deals from both the Mets and Rangers. It now looks extremely likely that he will be a Met.

I'm glad Barajas is coming to the team. He isn't the best catcher, but he is the best option out there. Plus, a battery of Barajas and Henry Blanco may be one of the best defensively in the league.

Fans can see 26 of the Mets' spring games

Twenty-two of the Mets' 34 Spring Training games are scheduled to be broadcast and/or televised by the three recognized sources of Mets games -- SNY, WFAN and PIX11. SNY will air 12 games, WFAN will broadcast 10 contests and PIX11 will televise four games.

SNY's first telecast is to be the spring opener, on Tuesday, March 2, at 1:10 p.m. ET against the Braves in Port St. Lucie, Fla. WFAN will begin its broadcasting on Saturday, March 6, with a game against the Nationals at 1:05 p.m. And PIX11 and WFAN will carry the 1:10 p.m. home game against the Nationals the following day.

Barajas deciding between New York and Texas

Catcher Rod Barajas is deciding between minor-league offers from the Mets and Rangers, reports Ken Rosenthal. The two teams are both offering one year deals, but the Mets are offering $1 million if he makes the team, while the Rangers are offering $1.5 million.

I hope that Barajas chooses the Mets over the Rangers. The Mets present a better opportunity for him in terms of playing time, because the Rangers already have a starting catcher. And honestly, if he demands another $500k from the Mets, I would just give it to him. They need a guy with his type of power and defense.

More on Reyes and the Impact He Will Have on the Mets

In Jerry Crasnick's 'Starting Nine', he has Jose Reyes as his #1 player coming off an injury last season that's going to have the biggest impact this season.

Crasnick states: "There's no overstating the void Reyes' absence created in the New York lineup. Even with Reyes' 36-game contribution factored in, New York's shortstops ranked 27th in baseball with a .623 OPS. Fans at Citi Field saw way too much of Alex Cora, Anderson Hernandez, Wilson Valdez and Angel Berroa."

Here's to hoping a healthy and wildy successful 2010 for Jose!

Manuel Say He May Bat Reyes 3rd

Manager Jerry Manuel spoke to the media today and said that he might move Reyes to the third spot in the order from leadoff while outfielder Carlos Beltran is out after knee surgery. Either Angel Pagan, Beltran's likely replacement, or second baseman Luis Castillo would bat leadoff.

Beltran is expected to return in May at the earliest.

"I think he's ready for that if it's something we need," Manuel said, according to the Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. "This could be a part of his evolution as a player."

Manuel hinted last year that he might bat Reyes third but never instituted the lineup switch in a regular-season game.

Reyes said he was fine with Manuel's plan.

"I'm good with it," Reyes said, according to the New York Post. "I just want to be in the lineup."
Reyes said the order switch isn't a definite yet, however.

"He's not sure yet. We just talked about it a little bit yesterday," Reyes said, according the New York Daily News. "I said I'm open to anything you want me to do. It's not a problem."

Today

Is a new day.
Mets Spring Training coverage begins tomorrow. Right here on MetsGuide.

Escobar Feels Discomfort

According to The New York Times, while working out in preparation to join the Mets, reliever Kelvim Escobar felt some discomfort in his right shoulder, so the Mets will proceed slowly with him. He will not be up to speed with the rest of the pitchers when he reports to camp on Thursday.

Escobar, who had surgery on his shoulder in 2007, missed all of 2008 and pitched only five innings last year for the Angels.

General Manager Omar Minaya wants Escobar, who had 38 saves for the Blue Jays in 2002, and the Japanese right-hander Ryota Takahashi to vie for the eighth-inning setup role.

It's really early and pitchers and catchers haven't even officially reported yet but this is obviously one of the last things a Mets fan wants to hear right now. These things happen early on when pitchers start their throwing again after the winter long break. With Escobar and his injury problems over the years, it's definitely cause for worry though.

Are the Mets after Barajas or not?

FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal wrote this morning that the New York Mets were pushing hard to sign free agent catcher Rod Barajas, but in the Newark Star-Ledger, Mets officials deny that they are after Barajas, at least to such levels.

Barajas made $2.5 million last year and hit 19 home runs for the Toronto Blue Jays. Unfortunately, Barajas is not seen as a staunch defender (although he threw out 29.3% of potential base stealers last season) and posted a poor .258 on-base percentage in 125 games. Furthermore, his career OBP sits at .284, and with the slide to on-base percentage the past decade or so, we can understand why clubs aren't lining up to sign a catcher with that kind of power.

Jon Heyman of SI tweeted this morning that the Mets were in fact interested in Barajas but only for a minor league deal.

With pitchers and catchers now reporting to most camps, can you believe that this is that big of a story? I know it's the Mets and they have had hundred's of issues in the past 3 seasons but it's Rod Barajas not Johnny Bench. Seems like 1 reporter reports it as truth for only the next reporter to deny it or say the signing (if it were to happen) would be on a lesser scale. Although he could add some pop to the bottom of the lineup every now and again, to me, its not that big of a deal. He won't have that big of an impact on the season, whether he's the Mets catcher or not. I just want it to be a non-story as soon as possible.

Barajas to Mets on minor-league deal?

As Jason reported last night, the Mets are in pursuit of catcher Rod Barajas. Jon Heyman of SI.com now says that if Barajas does become a Met, it will likely be on a minor-league deal.

I just want this guy. He's not the best catcher out there, but he is better than what the Mets have right now.

Escobar could be bridge to K-Rod

The Mets are keeping an open mind when it comes to who will be their eighth-inning reliever, but the New York Post says the front-runner could be free agent signee Kelvim Escobar.

The 33-year-old Escobar, who has pitched in one game over the last two seasons due to elbow problems, will be part of a competition that includes Ryota Igarashi, Bobby Parnell and Sean Green.

The Mets may be reluctant to award the job too early. J.J. Putz was given the job prior to spring training last season, but the right-hander endured an injury-plagued season before signing with the White Sox this winter.

The Mets FINALLY Might Get a Catcher

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets are making "a hard push" for free-agent catcher Rod Barajas and negotiating with him on a one-year deal, according to major-league sources.

Barajas, 34, likely would get the bulk of playing time for the Mets, whose other catchers — Henry Blanco, Omir Santos, Chris Coste and Josh Thole — are either backups or unproven.

Earlier this offseason, the Mets tried to land free-agent catcher Bengie Molina, who re-signed with the Giants, and passed on Yorvit Torrealba, who went to the Padres.

Barajas batted .226 for the Blue Jays last season. His on-base percentage was only .258. But he hit 19 home runs in 429 at-bats, finished with 71 RBIs and threw out 29.3 percent of his attempted base stealers, second best in the American League.

The Rangers and Mariners also have been pursuing catching help.

Felipe Lopez would be a solid fit for the Mets: Olney

ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney writes in today's blog that free agent Felipe Lopez would be an excellent addition for the Mets. "He could contend for a starting job at second base and play all over the place, and because he would probably be inexpensive now."

Before the offseason began he was considered a top available free agent. Maybe the reason he is still out there was the fault of his agent, Scott Boras. Well now he has fired Boras and hired a Beverly Hills firm. It'll be interesting to see what happens with him and how quickly he will now sign.

He's been tied to the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers of late.

Wang signs with Nats

MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that the Nationals have signed pitcher Chien-Ming Wang to a one year deal. They will hold a press conference Friday.

He won't be ready until May, but this could really pay off. Rumor is the deal is worth $2 million plus incentives. That's a bargain compared to what this guy can do.

Odds and Ends: Chavez, Jacobs, PSL

  • Jon Morosi of FOXSports reports that the Rangers have signed former Met Endy Chavez to a minor-league deal.
  • Although Mike Jacobs doesn't have an "out" in his contract if he doesn't make the major league team, the Mets will likely trade or cut him if he doesn't, according to Adam Rubin.

Reasons to be hopeful, Reasons to be worried

Lets face it. The Mets have a lot of negativity surrounding them these days. (And some if it is well deserved.) However, I try to remain optimistic throughout it all. Below, I list three reasons to be hopeful about the upcoming Mets season, and three reasons to be worried.

Reasons to be hopeful:
  • Johan Santana: Johan is the team ace, and a workhorse. You know that he's going to go out there and give it his all.

  • Jeff Francoeur: Frenchy is a guy with a personality that every team should have. He's always remains positive, and looks for the good in everyone and everything. I hope that his personality rubs off more on the Mets this season.

  • Jose Reyes: There's no question that the Mets missed Reyes the most last year. His infectious personality and hustle is something that the team could have used.

Reasons to be worried:

  • Oliver Perez: Perez was a disaster last year. There's no other way to put it. He was accused of "taking it easy" after signing his new contract with the team. Supposedly he's been working out hard this winter and has refocused, but I'll believe it when I see him pitch his first game.

  • Luis Castillo: Castillo had a bounce back year in 2009, but his dropped ball at Yankee Stadium left a sour taste in the mouth of Mets fans. It remains to be seen if he can put up a second solid year with the Mets.

  • The front office situation: This is a big distraction. With Omar (and Jerry) a losing streak from being fired, the team may be uptight. Let's hope that they can get off to a quick start in 2010.

What Will The Mets Get Out Of Oliver Perez in 2010?

Rich Coutinho of 1050 ESPN Radio has another solid article up, this time discussing Oliver Perez.
Here is a piece of it:

'Omar Minaya signed him to a 3 year $36 million contract in 2009 that many felt was a huge leap of faith. And after a disastrous 2009 season, many of those experts said, "You see I told you so." But Oliver Perez is hell bent on proving the experts wrong so the question remains can the Mets enigmatic southpaw do just that?

If the New York Mets are to rebound in 2010, they will need bounce back seasons from Jose Reyes and David Wright as well as a Carlos Beltran speedy recovery. It would also help if both Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur provide the corner outfield production the Mets are expecting from both of them. But even if all those things come to pass, the team needs a reliable #2 starter to sit behind Johan Santana. Simply put, Oliver Perez needs to start earning his $12 million per year contract.

Met ace Johan Santana said recently, " I see a different Ollie--he is hungry and I expect a lot from him. He stills needs to be his fun-loving self but I see him more positive than last year. Remember he was hurt last year and there were times his knee hurt so bad he wasn't even able to walk on it." And just to give you a little perspective, Santana is a player who means what he says and says what he means. He is honest--to a fault. Remember his early season criticism of Daniel Murphy's shoddy left field defense in the season's first week last year.'

The Mets are a Valuable Brand

According to Forbes Magazine, The Mets have the ninth most-valuable sports brand in the world, and the second most-valuable brand in Major League baseball, totaling about $159 million.

“The important thing to note here is that the numbers are Forbes calculations of the brand value alone, not the complete value of any team, athlete, event or business. It’s all about branding.”

The Yankees are the most valuable brand in baseball, worth about $266 million, and the Red Sox check in at third, about $2 million behind the Mets.

After reading that I thought to myself, "Really? They have no money left to spend on Free Agents??"

Smoltz Still Playing the Waiting Game

John Smoltz has no plans to retire, even though there is a possibility that he might follow the lead from Pedro Martinez and wait until mid-season to find an employer.

The New York Times reports today that Smoltz is seeking a deal of at least $3 million, a hefty sum for a 42-year-old whose best years are behind him.

Smoltz has been linked to the Mets, but that option likely came off the board Thursday when New York signed Japanese left-hander Hisanori Takahashi.

Could Smoltz's new boss be the same as the old boss? Smoltz told the Atlanta JC on Thursday he would not be opposed to returning to Atlanta if the Braves are interested.

"Nothing is closed for me," he said. "That's why I'm talking about taking my time, letting things play out. A lot of things will go into this decision."

Smoltz would be a great mentor for a young staff and I think he still has a little left in the tank. Especially if he had two extra months to get ready.

Players out of options

Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News points out the four Mets with no minor-league options remaining:
  • Fernando Nieve
  • Nelson Figueroa
  • Pat Misch
  • Anderson Hernandez

Nieve, Figueroa, and Misch are all serviceable pitchers. There is a chance that when Spring Training is over, and if they don't make the team and are sent to Buffalo, they could be picked up on waivers. I don't really fear any one of them being claimed, because they are in no way a large part of the Mets season.

Hernandez doesn't bother me at all. He's a decent defender, but not a very good hitter. I would be shocked if he makes the Mets, and even more shocked if he's claimed on waivers.

Endy back sooner rather than later

Free agent outfielder Endy Chavez has made "rapid progress" recovering from knee surgery and could be playing by May, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com.

Morosi says the list of suitors for Chavez includes the Mets, Mariners, Blue Jays and Astros.

Chavez made one of the most spectacular catches in postseason history when playing for the Mets in the 2006 NLCS, but would New York be a fit now?

The Mets might be interested in another outfielder while Carlos Beltran recovers from knee surgery, but New York needs a player on Opening Day, not in May.

Mets sign Riggans

Determined to be the team with the most catchers on their roster, the Mets signed Shawn Riggans to a minor-league deal, according to a team press release.

Riggans hit .143 in seven major league games with Tampa Bay in 2009.

3 simple things the Mets can do to save their off season

The Mets have had an OK off season. Yes, they signed Jason Bay, but there are a few glaring holes to be filled. Here's 3 simple steps to fix that:

1. Sign Rod Barajas: Barajas can be had on a one-year deal, worth about $3 million. He may not be the best hitter, but he has pop, and is better than what the Mets have as their battery right now.
2. Sign Endy Chavez: Chavez could probably be had on a minor-league deal, and may be ready for action in late April or early May. He's a fan favorite, and a good defender (although it is yet to be seen how his injury could affect his defensive abilities.)
3. Sign Chien-Ming Wang: It looks like he may be close with the Nationals, but maybe the Mets can swoop in. The Nationals are reportedly offering him a one-year deal with a base of $2 million, and he could double that in incentives. If the Mets offered $2.5 million with better incentives, he may opt for the familiar confines of New York City.

I believe that by adding these 3 players, the Mets would improve their club, and salvage their off season. Barajas is a decent catcher, Chavez has upside, and Wang is a number two pitcher when healthy. They aren't the biggest names out there, but this plan just might work.

Mets sign Takahashi

Updated 2/11 at 12:12 pm David Lennon confirms that Takahashi is headed to the Mets.

Original Post 2/11 11:50 am According to David Waldstein of the NY Times, the Mets are near a deal with star Japanese lefthander Hisanori Takahashi.

Last season he was 10-6 with a 2.94 earned run average and struck out 126 batters and walked 36 in 144 innings with the Yomiuri Giants.

The deal is expected to be worth $1 million if Takahashi makes the big club, and another $500 thousand in incentives.

Mets sign Sandoval

Officials from the Arizona Winter League announced that the Mets have signed 22-year old shortstop Rylan Sandoval to a minor-league deal.

Sandoval was hitting .368 and led his team in runs scored in the AWL.

Eddie Dennis, Sandoval's manager in the AWL, said this of Sandoval:

"I'm not surprised at all as Rylan is a tremendous player both in the field and at the plate. He should go a long way in the New York organization and it is good that the Mets moved fast as we had three other MLB teams calling about him and planning on sending scouts."
The Mets originally drafted Sandoval in 2007, but he opted for a scholarship to Long Beach State instead.

Takahashi deciding between the Dodgers and Mets

According to Nippon Sports, Japanese free agent pitcher Hisanori Takahashi is deciding between the LA Dodgers and NY Mets. The signing would be a minor league deal.

More on Jacobs deal

According to Jon Heyman of SI, Mike Jacobs' deal pays him a $900,000 base if he's in majors plus $1.15 million in incentives for possible total of $2.05 million.

With Jacobs power from the left side of the plate and adequate defense, he has a real shot to not only compete against Murphy & Tatis for the 1st base job but he's has a real shot to win it.

Mets sign Mike Jacobs

Updated 2/10 4:44 pm John Heyman tweets that the deal is done, and that he could even win the first base job over Daniel Murphy.

Original Post 2/9 9:41 pm Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Mets are close to a minor-league deal with former Met Mike Jacobs. Jacobs will reportedly get an invitation to Spring Training.

I said at the start of the off season that the Mets should bring back Jacobs, and that he could be had on a minor league deal. If he doesn't make the team, he will at least improve the minor-league team.

Mets avoid arbitration with Pagan

According to Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News, the Mets have agreed to a one-year, $1.45 million deal with Angel Pagan, avoiding arbitration.

That's a bargain for a player like Pagan, who brings tremendous upside to the team.

Mets lower Centerfield Wall

According to WFAN, The Mets have lowered the Centerfield wall from 16 feet to 8 feet.

Omar Can Still Salvage Off-season

Joel Sherman of the NY Post writes that Omar can still save the Mets roster by signing a few bargain free agents.

The Mets can still bargain shop. They were willing to spend about $12 million in 2010 on Molina and Pineiro. So, in theory, they have at least that to spend. The Mets would tell you there is no use spending just for spending’s sake. I agree. But the Mets still lack depth, and lack of depth — more than lack of character — has been their biggest nemesis the past few years.

For roughly $12 million, the Mets could still probably have catcher Rod Barajas, first baseman Russell Branyan, reliever Kiko Calero, utilityman Felipe Lopez and starter Jarrod Washburn to deepen every facet of their roster. Obviously, they are not signing them all, but they should be thinking of some.

Bobby Valentine is the Obvious Next Step as Mets Manager

The most obvious next step for Bobby Valentine is Flushing, says Bob Klapisch in a report for FoxSports.com.

According to Klapisch, “Jerry Manuel has two months, at best, to prove he can reverse the Mets downward spiral, which began all the way back in Game 7 of the 2006 NL Championship Series.”

Klapisch feels one long losing streak could get Manuel fired. “Question is,’ he asks, ‘would ownership have the guts to re-hire Valentine?’

I am personally a HUGE fan of Bobby V but let's see what happens during the season. Jerry did a great job of keeping his cool during awful times last year and deserves ample time to do something positive this year. Jerry is a very good personality in the clubhouse and when dealing with the New York media. The only problems I had with the team last year was that they made too many mental mistakes and too many fielding errors. 2 things, if any, the manager can turn around on the field of play.
