According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Sandy Alomar Jr. has left the Mets to become the 1st base coach and catching instructor for the Cleveland Indians.Alomar Jr. was the catching instructor last year for the Mets, but his position for the 2010 season was still unknown.
His father, Sandy Alomar Sr., was not retained by the Mets as bench coach and is expected to be given another role within the organization.
This may not seem like a big loss, but it is. Alomar Jr. was a key part of Omir Santos' success this past year, and with Josh Thole coming up to the bigs sometime soon, he would have helped him tremendously. This move is good for Razor Shines (that noise you hear is a collective groan for Mets Nation) to become 1st base coach. It is expected that Bob Melvin, Eric Wedge, or Dave Jauss will become the bench coach next year.
